August 5, 2019 marks the fifth anniversary year that Derek Seehausen disappeared into the Los Angeles night. He has not been heard from or seen since that day.
I am the 1 out of the 100 that believes Derek might still be alive.
Our office was retained by Derek’s family shortly after his disappearance. The case has haunted me personally and is one of the most perplexing of my 50 year investigative career.
In my latest book, Seeing Life Through Private Eyes, I dedicated part of the chapter (Chapter Seven: “Disappeared”) to Derek’s case. It begins…
In the summer of 2014, twenty-six year old Derek Adam Seehausen, one of the top medical students in the country, was in his last semester of medical school at the University of Southern California. He was bright and athletic, blessed with a loving family and many close friends.
All the information we have about Derek’s disappearance is detailed in the following websites and written chronologies:
- HelpFindDerek.com: This is the web site that was set up by the family.
- MartinPI.com: You can read all posts with the tag Derek Seehausen here.
- Reddit.com: There’s a helpful archived thread here. You can also type in Derek’s name and find posts with a timeline and comments.
- Facebook.com: A Help Find Derek page is here, and Derek’s personal Facebook page is here.
- CaseRemains.com: There’s an outstanding podcast here that provides a detailed summary of the case.
I think that if you spoke to 100 of the top investigators on the planet, my guess is that 99 of them would tell you that Derek is deceased.
Their argument is simple and straight-forward: Derek was smart. There’s no doubt he could have accomplished killing himself and determine how to hide his own body at the same time.
Every day, month and year that goes by, their conclusions bear more credibility.
However, I am the 1 out of the 100 that believes Derek might still be alive.
I don’t think there’s another person or investigator who has conducted more interviews and interrogations of all people tied to this matter than myself and my staff. I feel like we know many aspects of Derek Seehausen as well or better than most people. This position is not a wild claim. I was trained as a profiler when assigned as a federal agent with the Department of Justice. I taught the art of interview and interrogation at the federal academies and did so representing the U.S. in teaching federal agents and police officers in over 60 foreign countries.
Based on that experience and the profile we have developed on Derek, I don’t believe he would commit suicide and leave his family and friends in an eternal state of not knowing what happened. Derek simply would not leave loved ones without finality or closure.
That’s why, effective immediately, I am offering a $25,000 reward for information that leads to finding Derek or physical evidence supporting his death. This offer will stand for one year or until August 5, 2020.
If you suspect you have seen or helped Derek in any way prior to or after his disappearance, please step forward.
